For 15 or so weeks each year, large numbers of Students Helping Honduras volunteers from US colleges and universities visit Villa Soleada Village. They help teach and provide ready hands for numerous projects. And...they provide a local market for Villa Soleada's fruitsicles. Prepared on site and using a variety of locally available tropical fruits, their icy freshness offers hydration, nourishment and refreshment. Your investment provides capital for purchase of molds, wooden sticks, sealable bags, and a freezer. At a price point of $1, each fruitsicle produces nearly 75 cents in profit.
Tilapia Farm in Villa Soleada Village
With support and guidance from Students Helping Honduras, families from the largest riverbed shantytown in El Progreso purchased and developed a beautiful, 13-acre plot of land in northern El Progreso. 44 moved into the new village, which they named Villa Soleada. Through hard work and "sweat equity" their village now has clean drinking water, an eco-friendly sewage system, electricity, 44 homes, road access, 3 soccer fields, a bilingual school, 2 children’s homes, a hostel, and steady access to employment as construction workers, cooks, drivers and project managers.
Villa Soleada residents now wish to add and operate a tilapia farm on their property. Their tilapia farm will provide a steady, inexpensive supply of high-protein food, paid jobs related to tilapia production, and income from the sale of excess tilapia to the hundreds of families who live nearby.
CEID Dental Assistant Training Academy
CEID, Centro de Estetica e Implantes Dentales offers a full menu of dental services, including a range of cosmetic options. Currently no dental assistant programs exist in San Pedro Sula. As a service to San Pedro Sula dental professionals and a means of assuring a well-prepared supply of dental assistants, CEID wishes to offer training opportunities to young women who aspire to become dental assistants.
Centrally located in the city, CEID resides in a newly constructed and secure complex. Immediately adjacent to CEID's offices, a currently vacant space could easily accommodate a dental assistant training classroom. Combined with the existing clinical space and equipment, the adjacent training classroom makes possible easy observation and practice in a working dental office.
